Whether it’s a new 2024 model like the Chevrolet Equinox EV or an older one with the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, or something from a PHEV maker such as Kia or Polestar, the list is expanding. And thanks to the law of supply and demand, many are available at discounted prices or with a low-cost lease.

Even so, the market may have peaked as early adopters have bought their cars and gone back to their old gas-powered rides. And with interest rates high, it can still be tough for many to afford an EV at the list price.

However, used EVs are an option for buyers with a tight budget. EV battery analysis and research firm Recurrent found that used EVs are on the market for about 27% less than their comparable gas-powered counterparts, and some models are as low as $10,000.

In addition to saving money, buying a used EV can help reduce upfront costs and maintenance expenses as well. EVs require far fewer maintenance items than traditional gas-powered cars, such as the transmission, and there’s less need for oil changes because of regenerative braking. Those savings can add up quickly.

But be sure to check an EV’s history before making a purchase. Buyers should get a vehicle history report, which can reveal important information like accident or theft histories and whether the car has been properly maintained or serviced. It’s also important to make sure the EV is compatible with public charging stations by looking for an SAE J1772 plug or a Combined Charging System (CCS) adapter if needed.
